Error Locating Server/Instance Specified Error During Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 April CTP Setup

If you receive the following error during installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 April CTP, perform the following steps to resolve the issue:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP Setup ---------------------------------------- SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information. For details on how to view setup logs, see "How to View Setup Log Files" in SQL Server Books Online. For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&ProdVer=9.00.1116&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=29545&EvtType=lib%5Codbc_connection.cpp@Do_sqlScript@OdbcConnection::connect@xffffffff

  1. Run SQLServerManager.msc from the Run dialog box. SQLServerManager.msc is installed ONLY when you have installed the Client Tools. So, in order to perform this fix, also install the client tools.
  2. Expand the SQL Native Client Configuration tree in the left pane.
  3. Select the Client Protocols node in the left pane.
  4. Right-click on the Shared Memory protocol and then click on Enable.
  5. Click on Retry from the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 April CTP Setup error dialog box.
